I recently adopted two beautiful kittens, and although I have lost quite a bit of sleep when they decide they wanna play with me at 3 am, I have noticed a general lowering of my stress levels when I am home with them during the day... and apparently they could be keeping me even healthier than I know.
According to a study done by the Fauna Communications Research Institute in North Carolina (FCRI), "nature has endowed all kinds of felines with an evolutionary healing advantage in the simple act of purring." Cats purr in the range of 25 to 50 Hertz... although I'm not completely sure what that means, research has shown that exposure to frequencies at these levels actually induces increased bone density. There is also some research to suggest that the frequency of their purrs can induce pain relief, and heal muscles and tendons. And, even cooler, older adults with cats have been found to have lower blood pressure... so purring seem to work wonders on the heart as well.
They may wake me up every night when they purr loudly in my ear, but maybe they are just trying to keep me healthy! ;)
